The Federal Communications Commission announced restrictions on new Chinese-made robots, deeming them a threat to national security.
The U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) announced a ban on the sale and use of new robots from China, citing “unacceptable risks to national security.” The decision aligns with the Donald Trump administration’s policy of limiting the entry of Chinese technology into the U.S. market.
The agency explained that the restriction applies to both humanoid robots and quadrupedal automatons that had not yet been authorized for sale in the United States. Furthermore, the FCC warned that it retains the authority to review and even revoke permits previously granted to products already on the market.
The agency argued that these devices collect vast amounts of information that could be used for espionage or surveillance purposes. “Advanced robotic devices collect data that could be used by malicious actors to monitor Americans, enhance the capabilities of foreign intelligence services, or remotely control the robots,” the FCC stated.
The White House defended the decision, noting that the country must ensure independent and secure supply chains for strategic technologies. “Economic security is national security,” a Trump administration official told Reuters.
The move comes amidst growing technological competition between the two powers. In recent years, the United States has also restricted the operations of Chinese companies like Huawei and taken action against apps such as TikTok, citing national security concerns.
China, for its part, rejected the announcement. Its embassy in Washington called on the United States to stop “smearing Chinese companies” and threatening them with sanctions, while warning that the Beijing government would respond with necessary measures if it deemed its interests to be compromised.
