FBI Hacked and Agent Data Stolen: What Information Was Exposed

The FBI confirmed it is investigating a compromise of its job portal and is seeking to determine whether the breach occurred within its own systems or via a third-party provider.

The FBI confirmed it is investigating a cyberattack that reportedly allowed access to the personal information of its employees and individuals who had applied to work at the agency. The incident was linked to the FBIJobs.gov portal, and the agency is still trying to determine exactly where the breach occurred.

This confirmation followed claims by the hacker group ShinyHunters that they had obtained sensitive information on thousands of FBI personnel. The group stated that the material included data on current and former agents, as well as individuals who had submitted job applications.

What data was exposed

The information the attackers claimed to have obtained includes names, home addresses, phone numbers, Social Security numbers, work assignments, and details regarding the family members of FBI employees.

Reuters analyzed a sample of approximately 5,000 records and was able to partially verify some of the data using credit records and other previously exposed information. However, the news agency clarified that it could not independently establish that all the material had been extracted directly from the FBI’s internal systems.
