The pontiff maintained that extreme scenarios regarding artificial intelligence should not be ruled out and called for ethical training and international regulations.
Pope Leo XIV once again focused on the advancement of artificial intelligence, issuing a warning about the risks posed by its development in the absence of controls. Upon returning to the Vatican from his trip to France, he asserted that even the most extreme scenarios must be taken seriously.
The pontiff clarified that he is not in a state of panic, but emphasized that warnings regarding the potential serious consequences of AI “must be taken seriously” and cannot be dismissed as mere exaggerations or fake news.
During his visit to France, Leo XIV had already raised the need to “form minds in ethical discernment” to distinguish which uses of technology truly serve human dignity.
Leo XIV Called for International AI Governance
The Pope also expressed support for moving toward international mechanisms that would establish limits and common criteria for the development of the most advanced artificial intelligence systems. His stance aligns with a growing global debate on the need to prevent these tools from becoming concentrated in a few hands or advancing without oversight.
During his time in France, President Emmanuel Macron also raised the need for an international organization capable of intervening regarding the most powerful AI models.
Leo XIV’s position does not imply a rejection of technology. In previous statements, the pontiff highlighted the benefits it can bring to areas such as health, education, and communication, while insisting that its development must be accompanied by rules capable of protecting rights and preventing new inequalities.
