Loïk Le Priol received a 26-year prison sentence for the murder of the former “Puma,” while Romain Bouvier was sentenced to 19 years for attempted murder.
On Friday, the French justice system sentenced the two main defendants in the murder of Federico Martín Aramburu, the former Los Pumas player who was shot dead in Paris in March 2022. Loïk Le Priol received a 26-year prison sentence, while Romain Bouvier was sentenced to 19 years for attempted murder.
The verdict was handed down by the Paris Criminal Court following more than eleven hours of deliberation and a trial that lasted three weeks. Prosecutors had sought 27 years for Le Priol and 20 for Bouvier. The court ruled out premeditation and also rejected the self-defense arguments raised during the proceedings.
Le Priol was identified as the person who fired the shots that caused the Argentine former rugby player’s death. During the trial, he admitted to firing the shots, though he maintained he had acted in self-defense. Bouvier also admitted to using a weapon but denied having any intention to kill.
Details of the Aramburu killing
Federico Martín Aramburu was 42 years old when he was killed in the early hours of March 19, 2022. He was in Paris with his friend and former Biarritz teammate, New Zealander Shaun Hegarty; the two had traveled there to attend a Six Nations match.
Both men had been at the bar Le Mabillon, where an altercation with Le Priol and Bouvier took place. After the confrontation, Aramburu and Hegarty left the premises, but the investigation determined that the defendants followed them in a vehicle. According to the reconstruction presented during the trial, Bouvier fired four shots, two of which struck Aramburu. Shortly thereafter, Le Priol arrived and fired another six shots. Four rounds hit the Argentine, and two of them were fatal.
