Europe proposes banning social media for children under 13

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced a proposal to prevent children under the age of 13 from accessing social media.

The European Union is moving forward with a proposal to restrict children’s and adolescents’ access to social media. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced on Wednesday that the bloc seeks to ban the use of these platforms for children under 13 and establish special controls for adolescents.

The initiative is part of the so-called “EU Kids Act,” a project aimed at establishing common rules for the bloc’s 27 member countries. The European Commission plans to formally present the details of the proposal; if it moves forward, it must be debated and approved by the European Parliament and member states before becoming law.

What would happen based on age

The framework outlines different restrictions depending on the users’ age.

Children under 13 would be completely barred from accessing social media. For adolescents aged 13 to 15, the proposal envisions limited accounts—or “mini-accounts”—that would require parental supervision and include time limits and restrictions on certain features.

From age 15 onwards, adolescents would be able to manage their own accounts, although platforms would still be required to provide digital environments specifically designed to protect minors.
