Sprinter Guillermina Cossio won silver at the South American Games and revealed how she balances sports with her job.
Guillermina Cossio won a silver medal for Argentina at the Santa Fe 2026 South American Games, but behind this athletic achievement lies a reality rarely seen in podium photos. The sprinter from Santa Fe must balance her high-performance training with work and studies—to the point where she had to bring her computer to the competition to fulfill her work obligations.
The athlete, originally from Murphy, Santa Fe, spoke about the challenges she faces in sustaining her sports career. Discussing her training conditions, she noted there is “little support and few facilities,” explaining that she needs to work in addition to preparing for competitions.
This situation became particularly evident during the South American Games. While preparing for one of the most important competitions of her career, her boss kept sending her work tasks.
“For example, yesterday my boss was sending me work-related things while I needed to be focused on today’s final, which makes me lose my focus a bit. But well, in the end, it’s the day-to-day reality, and we have to keep moving forward,” Cossio recounted.
The computer traveled to the Games, too
To meet those obligations, the athlete decided to bring her computer to the competition. Her goal was to use part of the afternoon to make progress on work, though she acknowledged she couldn’t devote too much time to it.
“I brought my computer along, and I work on things a bit in the afternoon. But I can’t do much because I can’t spend the whole day on the computer,” she explained.
This situation highlights one of the challenges faced by many athletes who aim to compete at the highest level while maintaining other activities to support themselves financially.
