The Catholic University’s academic initiatives for the mining boom: hundreds of students and a focus on remote districts

The university reports that over 200 students are already pursuing technical degree programs from remote districts. It is expanding its mining-related training offerings to include new diploma courses and training sessions for workers, suppliers, and local communities.

In recent years, the Universidad Católica de Cuyo (UCC) has expanded its mining-related educational offerings and is currently working to bring degree programs and training closer to San Juan’s remote districts. According to Rector María Laura Simonazzi, more than 200 students are already pursuing university technical degrees entirely from these districts via a hybrid classroom system.

This expansion of academic programs is taking place against the backdrop of growing mining activity in the province and rising demand for training linked to projects currently under development or at various stages of progress. The university noted that its goal is not merely to train professionals for mining companies, but also to provide tools to suppliers and residents of the communities where these activities will take place.

Mining-related degree programs and training
Simonazzi explained to Tiempo de San Juan that the UCC has for some time offered degree programs and initiatives aligned with the sector’s needs. She cited Environmental Management and Occupational Health and Safety among them, as well as a postgraduate program in mining business management.

Various diploma courses and specific training programs have been added to this lineup. Offerings include training in mining supply chain management, asset security, and other areas linked to the so-called mining ecosystem.

This year, the university also launched a diploma course titled “Safe Mining Work: Risks, Prevention, and Safety,” aimed at workers, contractors, technicians, students, and community members connected to the industry. This training joins a portfolio that also includes instruction on safety, risk management, human resources, and other areas required by the industry.
