Winners and Key Moments of the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards

The 42nd edition of the MTV VMAs, held on September 27, brought together major stars such as Madonna, Lisa, and Taylor Swift—the latter standing out with multiple awards and exclusive premieres.

The 42nd edition of the MTV Video Music Awards took place on September 27, 2026, at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, California, hosted by rapper and entrepreneur Snoop Dogg. The event gathered iconic figures from the worlds of pop and contemporary music for a night filled with tributes, premieres, and award presentations.

The opening featured Madonna, who performed a medley of “Bring Your Love” and “Danceteria Afterhours” alongside Sabrina Carpenter and Charli XCX. Her performance—which included striking choreography atop a black grand piano—was one of the most talked-about moments of the evening.

K-pop star Lisa took home the award for Best Pop for her song “Dream,” a collaboration with Japanese actor Kentaro Sakaguchi. Lisa also delivered one of the night’s standout performances with her track “SaWaDiKa,” paying tribute to her native Thailand.

Taylor Swift, 36, became the most awarded artist in MTV VMA history, surpassing the record she previously shared with Beyoncé by reaching a total of 31 statuettes. Among her honors, she received the inaugural Artistic Director award for her work behind the camera, as well as the coveted Video of the Year award, which she dedicated to the late legend Dolly Parton.

The singer used the occasion to premiere the music video for her new single, “Patient Zero,” starring actors Colin Farrell and Dakota Johnson. However, they did not win the Artist of the Year award; that honor went to Madonna, who stood out by receiving multiple accolades.

One of the most moving moments was the tribute to the grunge band Nirvana, which received the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award—the first group to win this honor in over two decades. Bassist Krist Novoselic remarked: “Nirvana continues to resonate so deeply because people remain hungry for authenticity. Something real, something uncompromising. Something that tells you it’s okay to come as you are.”
