Dentistry on Social Media: How to Avoid Risks and Protect Oral Health

Dentist Dr. Fabio Galdeano warns of the risks associated with following oral health advice without consulting a professional.

Social media has become a common source of information regarding oral health. Viral videos and challenges promise whiter teeth and perfect smiles through simple methods, yet some of these practices can lead to injuries and complications.

Speaking to Salud & Bienestar, dentist Dr. Fabio Galdeano urged caution regarding this type of content and advised consulting a professional before trying any recommendations found online. “Only professional assistance and the expert knowledge of a dentist can truly help you achieve the smile you want,” he stated.

The specialist explained that every smile involves unique characteristics that require professional assessment. A patient’s anatomy, physiology, medical conditions, allergies, and history are all factors that can influence the choice of treatment.

Potentially Dangerous DIY Hacks

Among the most widely circulated recommendations are methods for brushing teeth with baking soda, activated charcoal, and other substances.
“There are many videos showing people brushing their teeth with baking soda, activated charcoal, and a host of other things that aren’t actually effective or safe,” Galdeano noted.

The dentist even mentioned practices involving the use of bleach, noting that he has treated patients with mouth injuries and lesions caused by the improper use of such substances.
