Since the opening of Nobu in Manhattan in 1994, the brand has grown to encompass an international network of luxury hotels and residences, cementing a lifestyle that blends gastronomy and hospitality.
In 1994, Robert De Niro ventured into the culinary world by opening Nobu—a restaurant located in Manhattan’s Tribeca neighborhood—alongside chef Nobuyuki Matsuhisa and producer Meir Teper. What began as a local culinary project evolved over the years into an international brand that today comprises 47 luxury hotels and residences across multiple countries.
The relationship between De Niro and Matsuhisa began years before Nobu opened, when the actor became a regular patron of the chef’s restaurant in Los Angeles. The blend of Japanese techniques and Latin American flavors caught his attention, giving rise to an innovative culinary concept—featuring signature dishes like black cod with miso—complemented by the understated aesthetic that defined the brand’s style.
Nobu succeeded in attracting a diverse clientele, ranging from entertainment figures to businesspeople and international tourists. This broad appeal was key to the brand’s expansion, transforming it into a comprehensive experience that encompasses not only fine dining but also hospitality and exclusive residences.
The move into the hotel sector began in 2013 with the opening of the first Nobu Hotel inside Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. The success of the restaurants located within hotels prompted the founders to develop their own accommodation concept, fusing gastronomy, design, and hospitality into a unique offering.
In September 2026, Nobu expanded its European presence with a hotel in Madrid, located at Calle Alcalá 26. This property features 50 rooms and suites, a restaurant spanning three levels, as well as a bar, lounge, and a seventh-floor terrace, reaffirming the brand’s commitment to luxury and the culinary experience. Robert De Niro remains a co-founder of Nobu alongside Matsuhisa and Teper as the brand continues its international expansion with new hotels, restaurants, and residences, cementing its identity as a lifestyle benchmark that combines the best of high-end gastronomy and hospitality.
