Psychopedagogy Month: Its Importance Across All Stages of Life

Psychopedagogue Florencia Martinez explained how this discipline supports learning from childhood through to old age.

September highlights a profession often associated solely with childhood and academic difficulties, even though its scope is much broader. During Psychopedagogy Month, Florencia Martinez visited Salud & Bienestar to explain how this discipline supports learning processes throughout the various stages of life.

“Psychopedagogy specifically works to support learning processes across the different stages of life,” she noted. As she explained, the goal is not merely to identify areas of difficulty, but also to recognize each person’s strengths and develop strategies that foster meaningful learning.

Lifelong Support

The work can begin in childhood—addressing difficulties with reading, writing, or mathematics, as well as issues with sustaining attention, frequent forgetfulness, disorganization, or low frustration tolerance. During adolescence, organizational tools and study techniques may be introduced, while work with older adults often involves cognitive stimulation.

Psychopedagogical assessment takes into account each person’s specific characteristics and needs, as well as the context in which they live and function. It can analyze aspects such as attention, memory, reasoning, executive functions, reading, writing, and mathematics.

Family support is also crucial. “We primarily need family support, openness from the school, and collaboration with other professionals,” Martinez maintained. In some cases, an interdisciplinary approach allows for a better understanding of the situation and the establishment of appropriate strategies.
