Three Healthy Relationships That Can Help Improve Daily Life

A psychologist specializing in relationships explains how to balance self-love, the romantic partnership, and connections with others.

Building healthy relationships involves more than just nurturing bonds with other people. Spanish psychologist Laia Sabaté, a specialist in romantic relationships, suggests that achieving greater well-being requires paying attention to three central connections: love for oneself, love within a romantic partnership, and love for others.

The specialist noted that while there is a great deal of information regarding what shouldn’t happen in a relationship, there are fewer tools available for learning how to build healthy bonds—whether in romantic partnerships, families, or friendships.

Self-love as a starting point

For Sabaté, the first bond that must be nurtured is the one each person maintains with themselves. She points out that prioritizing one’s own needs does not necessarily mean acting selfishly; rather, it is about learning to recognize one’s feelings and needs without disregarding others.

Listening to one’s own emotions can serve as a tool to boost self-esteem and understand which situations foster well-being or distress. The psychologist maintains that emotions can act as a guide for reconnecting with oneself and making decisions that better align with what one truly wants.
