Kinesiologist Jorge Centeno explained how to rehabilitate injuries and why respecting each stage allows for a safe return to sports.
Sports kinesiology neither begins nor ends with an injury. Its goal is also to support the athlete during recovery, respect biological timelines, and determine when they are truly ready to resume training or competition. This was explained by Jorge Centeno, a sports kinesiologist, on the Salud & Bienestar (Health & Wellness) program.
Unlike conventional rehabilitation, this field requires an understanding of the specific demands and injury mechanisms associated with each discipline.
“Understanding the injuries specific to each sport means I manage rehabilitation timelines, stages, and processes differently,” he noted.
Common issues include lower-limb injuries—such as ankle sprains and knee or hip problems—as well as lower back pain. Shoulder injuries are also frequent in sports like volleyball.
Recovery means more than just being pain-free
When an athlete arrives at the clinic, the assessment takes into account the injury, their age, how long they have been practicing the sport, and their prior physical condition. Centeno emphasized that every tissue requires a healing period that must be respected: “There are established biological timelines.”
